The characteristics of wine glasses

The characteristics of wine glasses

The characteristics of wine glasses
The wine glass is composed of several parts, most of them having an important role in terms of wine taste. These are: the base of the glass, the foot, the cup and the upper edge of the cup. In addition to these, the color of the glass from which the glasses are made is also important.
• The foot of the glass - is important because it allows you to hold the glass in your hand without touching the cup. The hands should not touch the cup because the heat of the body will heat the wine, and it will no longer be served at the right temperature.
• Cup - is one of the most important details, being a reference to differentiate between different types of glasses, suitable for different types of wine. The shape of the cup helps to maintain the aroma in the glass and to distribute it to the consumer through taste and smell. Also, the cups are made in such a way that there is enough space for the wine to release the aromas. Each cup model is specific to a type of wine.
• The mouth or the edge of the glass - is an extremely important element. The thinner the edge of the glass, the less it will be felt by the drinker and will not distract him from the taste and aroma of the wine. The best set of wine glasses will be composed of glasses with an extremely thin and fine edge, which will not prevent the wine from flowing smoothly.
• Glass color - in terms of glass color, you should know that the best glasses of wine are those made of transparent crystalline glass, with great clarity.

Glasses for red wine
For red wine, we recommend choosing a glass with a larger cup. It must be fuller and rounded, with a wide opening, so that the aroma of the wine is easily felt by the drinker. Also, the complex aroma and strong taste of red wines require a larger glass for the wine to come in contact with more air.
A specific type of glass for red wine is the burgundy glass, which is taller than a regular glass of red wine, but the cup is not as large. This glass is used for stronger red wine varieties, such as Cabernet and Merlot. Another type of red wine glasses is the burgundy glass, used for weaker varieties of wine, such as Pinot Noir. It is not as tall as the burgundy glass, instead having a wider cup than his.

Glasses for rose wine
Two types of glasses for the consumption of rose wine are accepted: those with a short and slightly tugged cup or those with a short and slightly flared cup. Given that rose wines have a fermentation similar to that of white wines, you can choose a set of glasses for white wine in case you can't find some special ones for roses. However, if you prefer a special set, you should know that glasses with a slightly flared shape are suitable for young rose wines, while those with an elongated shape are recommended for more mature wines. The cup of the pink glasses for mature wine is short and rounded at the base, similar to that of the glasses for red wine.
Glasses for dessert wines and fortified wines
The glasses for dessert wine or fortified wine must have smaller glasses in its composition, so that the wine is directed behind the oral cavity, considering the strong taste it has. Dessert and fortified wines generally have a higher concentration of alcohol, which is another reason why the glass must contain smaller dimensions, because the amount consumed will be smaller.
Glasses for sparkling wine
Sparkling wine refers to both champagne and aperitif wines, such as Prosecco. Sparkling wine glasses should have a cup with straight sides or just slightly curved. Also, the glass must be high and narrow for the sparkling wine to maintain its carbonation and aroma for as long as possible. The foot of the champagne glass must be high enough to prevent the hand from touching the cup. After all, sparkling wine must be served extremely cold!
Universal wine glasses
If circumstances do not allow you to choose a glass for each type of wine mentioned above, we recommend you buy a set of universal glasses, which can be used successfully for all types of wine. Although the experience will not be the same as the one you will have when you combine the right glass with a certain kind of wine, these glasses are practical and offer you versatility and effectiveness at an affordable price. The cup of the universal wine glasses has a compromise design between the cup of the white wine glasses and that of the red wine glasses, being thus suitable for the consumption of both types of wine.
